The 10K is underrated

The 10K is the best distance in running. It's long enough that you need real aerobic fitness but short enough that you can race it hard. Two laps of parkrun with intent. A proper test.

But most free 10K plans treat it like "run a bit more than 5K." That's not training. A good 10K plan builds your threshold, sharpens your VO2max, and teaches you to hold pace when your legs start complaining. Snel does all of this. And it adjusts the plan to match how your body is actually responding.

What makes this 10K plan different

VO2max-calibrated paces

Enter a recent race time or your easy run pace. Snel calculates your VO2max and gives every workout specific pace targets in min/km. No guesswork.

10-12 week structure

Four phases: Foundation, Build, Specific, and Taper. The Build phase introduces tempo and interval work. The Specific phase sharpens your 10K race pace. The Taper brings you to the start line fresh.

Real adaptation

Snel monitors your RPE, pace trends, and completed sessions. If your paces are consistently faster than target, it recalculates your zones upward. If you're accumulating fatigue, it dials things back.

Flexible scheduling

Run 3 days? 5 days? It doesn't matter. Snel builds around your availability and makes sure the key workouts land on the right days.

Sample week: Build phase (4 runs per week)

This is an example. Your plan will be calibrated to your fitness level and schedule.

Day Workout Duration Pace zone
Monday Rest , ,
Tuesday Easy run 35 min Easy
Wednesday 6 x 800m intervals 50 min Interval
Thursday Rest , ,
Friday Easy run 30 min Easy
Saturday Tempo run 40 min Threshold
Sunday Long run 55 min Easy/Marathon

4 sessions · 2 rest days · 1 long run

Stepping up from 5K

If you've been running 5K and want to step up, the 10K is the natural next goal. You already have a base. Now you need to extend it.

Snel recognises where you are. If you've done a 5K with Snel before, your VO2max carries over. The 10K plan builds on your existing fitness rather than starting from scratch.

The key difference in 10K training is more threshold work. Tempo runs at your lactate threshold pace teach your body to clear lactate more efficiently. That's what makes you faster over 10K.

Popular 10K goals

Finishing your first 10K. Breaking 60 minutes. Going sub-50. Sub-45. Whatever your goal, Snel builds the plan to get you there.

If you're targeting a specific time, the app shows whether your current VO2max supports that goal and how your training is tracking against it.

Frequently asked questions

Is this 10K plan really free?

Yes. Snel's free tier covers the full adaptive 10K plan. Pro is optional for deeper integrations and insights.

How long is the 10K training plan?

Typically 10-12 weeks. Snel adjusts the plan length based on your current fitness and when your race is scheduled.

I can only run three days a week. Is that enough for 10K?

Three quality sessions per week is plenty for a strong 10K. Snel structures those three days with the right balance of easy, tempo, and interval work.

What's the difference between this and the 5K plan?

The 10K plan is longer, includes more threshold training, and has a higher overall volume. The long run extends further, and the specific phase targets 10K race pace.

Do I need to have run a 5K first?

Not necessarily, but you should be able to run continuously for 30 minutes. If you can't yet, start with the Couch to 5K programme and come back.

Can Snel help me break a specific 10K time?

Yes. Set your goal time during onboarding. Snel calculates the VO2max you need and builds a plan to get you there. It tracks your progress and tells you if you're on target.

What should my long run be for 10K training?

Snel typically programmes long runs of 50-70 minutes at easy pace during the Build phase. The exact duration depends on your experience and weekly volume.

Will the plan include speedwork?

Yes. 10K training requires interval sessions at VO2max pace and tempo runs at threshold pace. Snel programmes these with specific paces and recovery intervals.
