What makes Paris special
Date & Distance
April 12, 2026. Full marathon (42.195 km). One of the world's largest marathons with over 50,000 runners and a route that reads like a Parisian tourist guide.
The Course
Starts on the Champs-Élysées, runs east through the Bois de Vincennes (km 12,22), returns through central Paris past the Bastille, then heads west through the Bois de Boulogne (km 32,38) to finish on Avenue Foch. Mostly flat with a gentle climb through the wooded parks.
Weather
Early April in Paris means 8,15°C. Spring sunshine can push temperatures higher, especially in the exposed park sections. Snel adjusts your target paces if race day turns warm, keeping your effort honest.
The Experience
Running past Notre-Dame, the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower in the distance, and through shaded Parisian parks is unforgettable. The atmosphere is festive and international. Paris makes the marathon feel like a celebration, not just a race.
Why train with Snel for Paris
Weather-adjusted race pacing
Parisian spring can surprise you with warmth. The Bois de Vincennes and Bois de Boulogne sections are partially shaded, but the central stretches are exposed. Snel recalculates your target pace for race-day conditions so you finish strong.
VO2max zones for smart pacing
Paris has gentle undulations through its parks that can disrupt pacing. With precise VO2max zones, Snel trains you to run by effort, not just pace - so you handle the slight inclines without over-pushing.
Winter base, spring peak
An April 5 race means training through the heart of winter. Snel builds your plan from a December start, adapts through January and February's tough conditions, and delivers peak fitness just as spring arrives.
Smart load management
16 weeks of training is a long time. Snel monitors your training load, RPE trends, and body-check responses to reduce volume before fatigue becomes injury. Arrive at the Champs-Élysées healthy and ready.
16 weeks to the Avenue Foch
Start training in mid-December to peak for April 12
Weeks 1,3Foundation
Holiday season training: build your aerobic base with easy runs and strides. Snel calibrates your zones from your early sessions or a recent race result. Start slow, finish fast.
Weeks 4,9Build
Volume increases through January and February. Tempo sessions, marathon-pace work, and long runs pushing past 28 km. The hardest phase - cold mornings, early darkness - but where the fitness is built.
Weeks 10,13Specific
March brings longer days and race-specific sessions. Marathon-pace long runs, sustained threshold efforts, and peak weekly distance. Your body locks in the pace that will carry you through Paris.
Weeks 14,16Taper
Volume drops sharply. Short race-pace efforts maintain your edge while your body recovers and super-compensates. By April 5, you're rested, sharp, and ready to run through the City of Light.
Paris Marathon questions
How do I register for the Paris Marathon?
Registration opens on the official Marathon de Paris website, usually in autumn the year before. No lottery - it's first-come, first-served and extremely popular. Places sell out fast, so register the day entries open.
Is the Paris course actually flat?
Mostly. The Bois de Vincennes (around km 15,22) and Bois de Boulogne (km 32,38) have gentle rolling sections - nothing steep, but enough to notice on tired legs. The central stretches along the Seine are flat. Overall elevation gain is about 50 metres.
What gear should I bring?
April in Paris can be cool at the start and warm by midday. Arm warmers you can remove are ideal. Bring a throwaway layer for the start line. Sunglasses if it's sunny - the Champs-Élysées faces east and the morning sun can be bright.
Any nutrition tips for Paris?
Paris provides water and energy stations every 5 km, with gels and fruit at select points. However, carry your own gels if you have a preferred brand. Practice nutrition during your Snel plan's long runs so race day has no surprises.
