Why most free 5K plans don't work

You search "free 5K training plan," download a PDF, and start following it. The problem? That plan was written for a generic runner. It doesn't know your current fitness. It doesn't know you can only run three days a week. And when you miss a session or feel fatigued, it has no idea.

Snel builds your 5K plan from scratch based on your actual ability. Then it adapts. If you're feeling strong, it nudges you forward. If you're tired or miss a day, it adjusts. That's the difference between a plan and a coach.

What's included in your plan

Personalised training zones

Your plan uses VO2max-based pace zones calculated from a recent race time or your current easy pace. Every workout has specific pace targets, not vague "run at moderate effort" instructions.

8-week periodised structure

Foundation phase to build your base. Build phase to add tempo and interval work. Taper week before race day. Each phase has a purpose.

3-5 sessions per week

You tell Snel how many days you can run. It fills those days with the right mix of easy runs, quality sessions, and rest. No more guessing.

Weekly adaptation

After each run, Snel checks your RPE feedback, pace data, and completed workouts. If you're handling the load well, intensity increases. If you're struggling, it pulls back. Automatically.

Who is this plan for?

This plan works whether you're aiming for your first parkrun finish or chasing a 5K PB. Snel handles both ends of the spectrum.

If you've never run before, Snel starts you with walk/run intervals and builds you up gradually. If you're already running and want to get faster, it calibrates your zones and gives you proper quality sessions.

Frequently asked questions

Is this 5K training plan really free?

Yes. Snel's free tier covers the full adaptive plan for every distance. Pro is optional for deeper integrations and insights.

How many weeks is the 5K plan?

Most plans are 8 weeks, but Snel adjusts the length based on your current fitness and race date. If you need more time, you'll get a longer plan.

I've never run before. Can I use this plan?

Absolutely. Snel detects that you're a beginner and starts with walk/run intervals. You'll build up gradually until you can run 5K continuously.

What if I miss a training session?

The plan adapts. Snel redistributes the work or adjusts your week. Missing one run won't ruin your training.

Do I need a GPS watch?

No. A phone is enough. Snel works with Strava, Garmin, and Apple Health if you use them, but they're optional.

Can I use this plan for parkrun?

It's perfect for parkrun. Set your race date to your target parkrun Saturday and Snel builds your plan backwards from there.

How is this different from a 5K plan I find online?

Most free plans are static. They don't know your pace, they can't adapt when life gets in the way, and they don't adjust your training zones. Snel does all of that.

What pace zones does the plan use?

Snel calculates five zones based on VO2max: easy, marathon, threshold, interval, and repetition. Each workout targets a specific zone with exact pace ranges in min/km.
